177. Dynamic Area Coverage Using an Autonomous Vehicle Fleet (M-12-CAIR-032)

How can you quickly get visual coverage of an area with a swarm of drones? A coverage problem arises when there is a need to continuously monitor an environment with multiple agents equipped with sensing capabilities. Coverage control is an area of research that has many applications, including exploration, surveying and disaster response management. Coverage problems can be difficult in mountainous environments due to hills, cliffs and uneven terrain blocking the line of sight of the agents. This is sometimes known as a ‘shadowing’ effect.

Our research presents an effective coverage method that allows drones to self-organise to maximise what they can see in uneven terrain.
